Approval Plans & Standing Orders

Due to the limited budgeting resources available and the need to examine titles prior to purchase, there are few titles that the library purchases on approval plans. Standing orders exist for popular series fiction as well as for other specific needs. Should there be a need to create more special orders to fit a particular situation, please contact the Assistant Head for information on how to set it up.

Material Ordering

The RGMPL is contracted with Baker & Taylor and most books should be ordered through Baker & Taylor's website. Doing so may guarantee significant discounts to the library. You will need a login username and password in order to use Titlewave. Please contact Technical Services if you need assistance setting this up.

To request materials from vendors other than BTOL, please submit a Materials Request Form (link will open in new window) to the Assistant Head.

Orders will be placed bi-monthly pending budgetary approval. If you need a book sooner than that, or there are other time-sensitive issues that require faster purchasing, please consult either the Head or Assistant Head to arrange for an expedited order.

Gifts

At times it may be necessary to examine gift materials for inclusion in the collection. The RGMPL Youth Services department is not currently processing any of the following gift items into the collection:

Material that is acceptable and appropriate for adding to the collection should be placed on the "incoming" cart in Technical Services.

Periodicals

To request subscription to a new periodical, please submit a Periodical Request Form (link will open in new window) to the head of Youth Services.

Challenge Policy

All residents who wish to challenge material that is included in our collection must fill out a Request for Reconsideration of Materials Form (link will open in new window). These forms may be printed from the Intranet using the previous link, or found in the file cabinet at the Youth Reference desk.

The material in question will then be reconsidered by a committee designated by the Head of Youth Services. The challenge itself will also be reported to ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom, using their Challenge Database Form (PDF file). In the case of an appeal, the Library Board will review the decision to ensure that it was made according to all relevant collection development policies.

Resources to aid with challenges are available at ALA: Challenge Support
